Month of the Military Child Essay Contest

Books on BasesToday, April 1st, begins the Month of the Military Child.  Throughout the month, BSF will be celebrating our littlest heroes with programs just for them.  Kicking it off is an essay contest for military children with some exciting prizes, including a Barnes & Noble Nook!

In celebration of April’s Month of the Military Child, Blue Star Families wants to know what being a military child means to America’s youngest heroes.  Every military child has different experiences that help them grow into rounded young adults, ready to excel under any circumstances.  This is their opportunity to let America know what it means to be a military child.

Throughout the month of April, Blue Star Families will be holding an essay contest for children kindergarten through fifth grade, posing the question “What does it mean to you to be a military child?”

The contest is open to military children kindergarten through fifth grade. Who qualifies as a military child? Any child who has a parent or sibling (including step-parents and siblings) serving on Active Duty, in the Reserves or in the National Guard.

 Wonderful prizes will be given to the overall winner as well as the top two entries in each age category including AAFES gift cards, a Barnes & Noble Nook, books, and a webcam. If you are interested in encouraging your child to participate, please see the rules and guidelines below!

How to Enter:

  1. Become a member of Blue Star Families at www.BlueStarFam.org.

  2. Email us your child's essay to contests@bluestarfam.org

    • Include your name, state of legal residence, email and phone number, as well as your child's name and grade level

    • Word, PDF and JPG files accepted.

  3. Have your child's entry to us no later than 11:59pm EST on April 30, 2011.

What to Enter:

Have your child write an essay that is 100 to 200 words in length that answers the question: What does it mean to you to be a military child.?

Prizes:

Winners will be selected by our panel of judges from Blue Star Families. There will be one overall grand prize winner and first and second prize will also be awarded in each age category.

  1. The grand prize winner will receive a Barnes & Nobel Nook, a $300 AAFES gift card provided by United Concordia, a web cam and coupon code to record their own story from Be There Bedtime Stories, and a set of books from our sponsors, Random House and Sleeping Bear Press.

  2. First place prizewinners (1 from each age category) will receive a coupon code to record their own story from Be There Bedtime Stories, a $200 AAFES gift card provided by United Concordia and a set of books from our sponsors, Random House and Sleeping Bear Press.

  3. Second place prize winners (1 from each age category) will receive a coupon code to record their own story from Be There Bedtime Stories, a $100 AAFES gift card provided by United Concordia, and a set of books from our sponsors, Random House and Sleeping Bear Press.

All winners will also receive a Certificate of Achievement.

Winners will be announced on May 11th, 2011

Rules:

  1. All entries must be written by a child in grades K through 5 with a parent or sibling (including step-parents and siblings) serving on Active Duty, in the Reserves or in the National Guard

  2. Submissions must be received at contests@bluestarfam.org by 11:59pm EST on April 30, 2011.

  3. Submissions must be received from a parent or custodian of the writer. The parent must be a member of Blue Star Families and be at least 18 years of age. Join Blue Star Families at www.BlueStarFam.org.

  4. Submissions will be sorted into the following grade level categories:

    • Grades K-1

    • Grades 2-3

    • Grade 4-5

  1. All entries must be the work of the child.

  2. Finalists will be selected by May 11th, 2011.1st and 2nd prizes will be awarded to the top essay in each age category. Grand prize will be awarded to best overall submission, independent of the category winners. Winners will be announced on the Blue Star Families Web site at www.BlueStarFam.org.

Terms: By submitting writings to Blue Star Families, you are warranting that your child is the creator of the work. You also grant Blue Star Families the right to publish any submission, including writings, videos and photographs on the Blue Star Families website. You further indicate that your work will always be credited to the name included with your submission. We will withhold your child's last name from publication upon your written request.

Only one entry per military child is allowed. Parents may submit an entry on behalf of more than one child. Parents must be 18 years of age to submit an entry. Contest ends April 30, 2011. The winners will be announced on May 12, 2011. You must currently reside in the United States to enter. Email questions to contests@bluestarfam.org. Void where prohibited.

I think this contest gives kids like me a chance to let there emotions about being a military child free not just to them selfs but the world.i mean i am 11 and this thing will let my opinion free and not to myself!
