Blue Star Museums in Southern California
We took a trip to see my family in Southern California this past June, and I found out about this program while we were out there. My husband served in Iraq and is currently National Guard. We found some local museums that participated and got to visit 3 awesome museums while we were there...The Surf Museum and Art Museum in Oceanside and the Art museum in Riverside, I believe. We had so much fun!! Thanks to these museums for affording our family, and families like ours, the opportunity to do this!
Gold Star Families
Are Gold Star children eligible? Thank you!
Excusion of children of retirees
Looks like a great opportunity for military families, but I'm a bit disappointed at the exclusion of the children of retirees. We are often still connected to the bases on which we've served or are often civil servants following retirement. Many of us still have school-aged children who should be able to participate. It is wonderful to provide for those actively serving, but twenty or more should count for something as well.
Thanks so much for writing
Unfortunately, the Blue Star Museums program doesn't apply to retirees at this time. Blue Star Museums was started as a pilot partnership among Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts, and more than 850 museums across America to offer free admission to families with a parent or spouse serving during this time of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, especially focusing on the approximately 1 million children who have had at least one parent deployed. This program offers these families a chance to visit museums this summer when many will have limited resources and limited time to be together.
We're hopeful that with widespread participation, we'll be able to expand this program in the future. Thank you so much for all you and your family have given our country.
