LIttle Ones In Tow

Some of the hardest years as a parent happen when your children are small and need your attention every moment of the day. When you add in the practically “single parent” status that frequently comes with military life, life with little ones in tow can be exhausting. But it can also be the most rewarding thing we’ve ever done.

Apt to Adapt: A navy Wife learns to be Flex-able
By Megan Wyman

LaKyta Green has experienced many of the inevitable ups and downs of military life. With her family – husband Clifton and their four children – she's learned that adapting to new and trying circumstances is essential to making her Navy family work.

For instance, the Greens recently decided to homeschool all four kids in order to reduce some of the stress on their family. Taking charge of the kids' schooling gives their family the flexiblility to spend more time together when they are able to do so, she says. That's the sort of adapting that the Greens have had to master since Clifton enlisted in the Navy in 1997. He has been active duty ever since. LaKyta says that though the Green children expect some level of instability and frequent shifts in schedules, relationships, and communications that result from deployments and other job requirements, having control over their school schedules is a big help.

LaKyta is originally from Chicago and says she enjoys reading, writing, traveling, and helping out with various causes, including youth development and education, marriage and family relations, and worldview formation (religion, politics, philosophy, and history). She is currently working toward receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Regent University. The Greens are currently stationed in Norfolk, Va.

LaKyta says joining Blue Star Families has made her more aware of and involved in issues that affect military families. BSF has given her an opportunity to connect and interact with people in similar situations and ultimately help other military families.
