Military Family Lifestyle Survey 2009
Blue Star Families has the ability to actively engage our members by fielding surveys on issues that are important to them. We have a unique ability to provide an unvarnished, unfiltered viewpoint on military family issues. Our 2009 survey was presented at the request of the Speaker of the House to a military family roundtable that included members of the bi-partisian congressional Women’s Caucus as well as the White House Council on Women and Girls. Personal stories were shared and our members were able to make a lasting impression on the representatives present. Real military families, sharing a survey their organization created – this is what makes Blue Star Families a fresh new voice in the halls of government.
The most significant finding of our 2009 survey was:
First Lady Michelle Obama cited our survey numerous times in the weeks after it was released, including at a meeting she hosted at the White House for military family organizations, which included Blue Star Families co-founder Kathy Roth-Douquet.
Here are some remarks from survey respondents:
“I think the general public needs to have a greater understanding of the sacrifices the men and women who protect our country make. It seems like that unless you have a close family member in the military that there is little or no understanding of the stress and sacrifice that the family must also make. These people are giving the ultimate gift to protect our liberty. We need to make sure that the general public appreciates them.”
Support during deployment is a top need for military families. Many children have literally “grown up” in the midst of a constant deployment cycle. For the past 7 years this has been military families “normal.” Deployment, reintegration, workups, deployment…Families have had to adapt to this new OPTEMPO. Your support of Blue Star Families will help us empower our members to bring the support they need to their bases and communities.
