With 2.5 acres of historic gardens on the banks of the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, FL, the Cummer Museum is the perfect blend of art, gardens and education to inspire imagination and excitement for all ages. You can spend all day discovering both traditional works of art in the galleries and living art outside in the beautiful landscapes. The many exhibitions both inside the museum and out in the sculpture garden promise something for everyone.

And, on Saturday, August 6 from 2-4pm there will be a special Blue Star Families event. In addition to the live music and art making activities at the museum that day, there will be a Blue Star Families welcome table and a scavenger hunt! Make an afternoon of it and enjoy the best of the arts in Jacksonville. Did we mention that the museum is air conditioned?!

If this is your first visit to a museum, or even your fiftieth, use Blue Star Families Parent Tool Kit for great games to play in the galleries and activity sheets to keep the kids busy. All the ideas are designed to be age appropriate for kindergarten through high school. You can even design your own museum monster mash up using one of our fun downloadable pages!

If you aren’t sold already, here are a few words from Cara Bowyer, Director of Events & Programs to encourage your visit!

What makes your museum a great destination for active duty military families?

The Cummer Museum houses nearly 5,000 pieces of fine art, 2.5 acres of historic gardens, and a hands-on interactive area, all of which offer family-friendly activities. The Museum is also home to the Cummer Café and Cummer Shop, so families can stop in for lunch or pick up gifts. Also, because of the needs of the collection, the temperature in the Museum is quite low, making it a perfect summer destination on especially hot days.

What is unique about your collections?

We are a survey style museum, meaning that instead of focusing on a single time-period our collection spans art history. We have items on display ranging from 2,100 BC to the 21st century. In addition, our Gardens sit along the St. Johns River, providing a beautiful view beyond our campus.

Are there any special programs at the museum that Blue Star Families should add to their calendar this summer if they are in the your area?

We offer a range of programs for all ages. From our Art for Two class that caters to children ages 3-5 and their favorite adult to lectures, theater, concerts, cooking classes, exhibition openings, and more, we have something for everyone. Also of note is our summer camp program. For more information on our programs, please visit our calendar of events.

What are your favorite museum destinations?

I always enjoy visiting our special exhibitions. We typically have 1-3 special exhibitions at a time, each running for a few months. This allows us to supplement our permanent collection and to provide something new for visitors each time they are here.

Why does your museum participate in the Blue Star Museums program?

The Cummer Museum believes strongly in supporting our military community. We also believe in providing as much open access to the Museum as possible. The collection is here for the community far more than it is for us, and art has the power to open people’s minds and start conversations.

After your visit, don’t forget to participate in the Way Cool Creativity Contest for a chance at great prizes!
