Blue Star Families Chapter Director Nelida Lewis has devoted her life to helping Veterans and the Caregivers who support them. She supports Caregivers in her El Paso community and all over the country, using social media to connect with Caregivers and empower them to live healthy, balanced lives. She attends local and national events to advocate for Caregivers and Veterans. She stays knowledgeable about current issues and isn’t afraid to step forward on behalf of Caregivers to suggest improvements. She works hard to find relevant information to share with Caregivers in her El Paso community as well as resources to share with her national network of Caregivers. Nelida understands the need for Caregivers to connect with one another and have an outlet, and she works hard to make that happen in her community. She is an invaluable asset to her community and to Blue Star Families.

On November 1, the El Paso County Commissioner recognized Nelida’s work and the work of all Caregivers, and officially announced November 2016 as Military Caregivers Month in El Paso.

“There are an estimated 5.5 million caregivers throughout the United States caring for current and former military service members… Veteran caregivers are three times more likely to spend 40 hours a week caring for their Veteran, often to the detriment of the caregiver’s employment and economic security…

Despite all odds, 94 percent of Veteran caregivers, like El Pasoan Nelida Lewis, reported the care they provide as a labor of love and who are proud to serve their Veteran and their country…

Mrs. Lewis is the El Paso area Chapter Director of Blue Star Families, A Star for our Troops, and A Heroes Welcome, where she and other caregivers strengthen military families every day through caregiving, career development, and leading research on military family life… Mrs. Lewis facilitates networking and support groups for fellow caregivers and Veteran spouses to empower one another through social events, peer-to-peer discussions, and stress-relief exercises…

Veteran caregivers, like Nelida Lewis, are among the unsung heroes in communities like ours, providing compassionate, holistic, and invaluable care to those best among us who heeded the call to service of this great nation of ours…

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the El Paso County Judge and Commissioners Court the month of November 2016, be recognized as “Veteran Caregiver Month.”

Nelida accepted the honor by saying, “On behalf of over 5.5 million caregivers who provide this labor of love to our wounded warriors, I’m happy to know we are being recognized even though we continue to care for our veterans without the need for any acknowledgements.”

Blue Star Families is so thankful for the work Nelida does for caregivers and military families in El Paso. Congratulations, Nelida! We are also thankful for all of the military caregivers out there who work tirelessly to support their families.
