On the evening of March 22, 2017, we gathered some of our Blue Star Neighbors and Blue Star Families to celebrate community in Washington, D.C. We’d like to express a huge and hearty thanks to everyone who came out to our Celebration this year, and to all our Blue Star Neighbors – supporters who make it all possible – from individual neighbors helping their next door military families across the land, to the many volunteers, donors and corporate partners who help make all of our military family programs and our annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey possible.

It is no secret that we’ve cracked the code to throwing a great party. What’s our recipe for an amazing night?

A Stunning Backdrop

2017 Blue Star Families Celebration American Flag Backdrop

Our incredibly generous partners at Hiring Our Heroes make this entire night possible by allowing us to use the United States Chamber of Commerce building in the White House’s backyard. Beautiful architecture, unbeatable ambiance, and a team of serious professionals transform our Blue Star Neighbor Celebration into something truly unforgettable.

The Best Food Ever & Some Healthy Competition

Celebrity Chefs at 2017 Blue Star Families Celebration

For the third year in a row, we partnered a military chef from each branch of the service with local celebrity chefs to create their own signature small plate. All of our guests vote for their favorite dish (or service branch). Not only is this a delicious example of non-military folks joining forces with their military peers, but it makes the entire night interactive. Generals share a love for ceviche with young veterans and a CNN news anchor can chat with military spouses over a signature Blue Star Families cocktail. This year, our line up included:

  • Cathal Armstrong (Restaurant Eve)
  • Chris Clime (PassionFish)
  • David Guas (Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery)
  • Todd Gray (Equinox)
  • Joe Palma (Bourbon Steak)
  • Robert Wiedmaier (Marcel’s)
  • Mixologist Todd Thrasher (Bar PX)

Some Amazing Company

Cammo Kids Choir at 2017 Blue Star Families Celebration

On our stage, you’ll not only find a choir of military kids, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and a CNN anchor, you’ll find some of the most down-to-earth change makers around. We had the privilege of honoring former First Lady Rosalynn Carter with the Blue Star Neighbor Lifetime Achievement Award. In her gracious speech, she said,

“I’m very pleased to be here this afternoon and to be in this room with all of you who care for military families. This recognition is a great honor. And particularly since it’s from Blue Star Families. I have such great admiration for you and the things you do to help these military families.”

In addition to Mrs. Carter, we celebrated and recognized MetLife and the National Endowment for the Arts with our Civil Leadership Award, and United Health Foundation with the Constance J. Milstein Philanthropic Award.

Blue Star Neighbor Award Honorees

This celebration is all about people like Ken and Judy Osborne, the winners of our 2017 Blue Star Neighbor Award. Ken and Judy have gone above and beyond to make the Burnett family feel welcomed and supported at their most recent duty station, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
