Join BSF’s Team Travis on their adventures through a three part series, we hope you enjoy part 1!
Our nation is incredibly fortunate to have awe inspiring and protected public lands! The America the Beautiful park pass covers entrance fees to over 2,000 national parks and federal recreation centers and is free to current U.S. military members and their dependents.
With a benefit like this available, who wouldn’t jump at the chance for some free outdoor exploring?
This summer, our Blue Star Families Team Travis Volunteers are doing just that! In this three-part series, we’ll take you to three different states where we’ve used our free military park pass: Arizona, California, and Hawaii!
For our first stop, we shine the spotlight on our awesome BSF volunteer Jasmine and her visit to Arizona. Jasmine has been a military spouse for a couple of years and started volunteering with BSF Team Travis over a year ago. She used her America the Beautiful pass to visit the Grand Canyon with her sisters.
“For Memorial Day weekend, my sisters and I decided to visit Arizona. We spent one day exploring Flagstaff by visiting the intriguing Indian ruins at Wupatki National Monument. The next morning we headed to the Grand Canyon where we hiked over 6 miles enjoying the breathtaking views. The weekend was very memorable and we were thankful that since we are a military family, we got free entrances to both National Parks.” -Jasmine Tijing

Grand Canyon National Park, located in northwest Arizona, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers over 1.2 million acres of land. According to the National Parks website, the canyon itself is 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and about 1 mile deep. There are several different species of plant and animal life to be found there. If you are planning a visit to the park, definitely be sure to check out the National Park Service website (www.nps.gov). It has so much information with helpful details to plan your visit, plant and animal life you can expect to see, and instructions on their Junior Ranger program!
Stay tuned for upcoming adventures as Team Travis heads west to explore California and Hawaii!
