Three amazing military spouses. Three different states. Three different military branches. One goal: Purchase new books for the families of ill or injured service members this holiday season.

Military spouses Mandie Sallings, Taylor Kelly & Alicia Smith all woke up one morning with the same question: How can I help military kids? What’s so strange about that, you ask? Well for starters, these three women had never met, live in different states, represent three different branches of the military… but all were Independent Consultants for Usborne Books & More and all had the same idea to reach out to Blue Star Families for support.

Sometimes, the (blue) stars just align!

The result of these new partnerships became three book drives, dedicated to providing new books for the families of ill or injured service members this holiday season! That’s right… three book drives! Blue Star Families is thrilled to introduce you to these inspiring military spouses and tell you their stories through this uplifting blog series. Each of these military moms has her own story of why books are important to her family, why she chose to partner with Blue Star Families and information regarding her book drive!

Book Drive 2 of 3: Alicia Smith

Alicia’s book drive takes place from October 1 – November 15

I am the granddaughter, daughter, wife, and niece of former active duty and national guard veterans; not-to-mention I too am an OEF veteran. When it comes to supporting our military it truly is like supporting my family and I can understand the struggles of military life and deployments from many different perspectives.

While I was deployed overseas I took part in an amazing program, which I’m sure you’ve heard of, called United Through Reading. This program allowed me to still bond with my then 18 month old daughter. It was then that I saw the true power of how reading a story can bring a sense of normalcy even at great distances. It was only natural that when I joined Usborne Books & More that I wanted to reach out to organizations that supported our current and former military members here at home and bring these moments of normalcy and love to their families through reading.

During my search I kept coming back to Blue Star Families. I love the work that you have been doing and just know that this is a great fit. I’m very excited to be working with you and helping these families of ill and injured servicemembers to know that we are here for them, always.
