BSF’s been playin’

By the end of June, Blue Star Families will have offered 18 events in 11 different communities in honor of Kids to Parks Day! Here are just a few of the highlights from past events, we became Junior Rangers with Ranger Rachel at Denali National Park in Fairbanks, we flew kites at Haines Point in DC, we learned about food, fun, and farming with Heroic Foods, and we learned to paddleboard with PaddleStrong in New York City!

We had some postponements due to rain in May, so, if you are in Emerald Coast, FL, Jacksonville, FL, or DC, be sure to come to one of the events near you. For more information, and to find an event, click here.  To read more about Kids to Parks Day, click here.

Blue Star Museums is in full swing

Y’all, Blue Star Museums (BSM) offers free admission to thousands of museums across the U.S. for active duty military members and their families, including Guard and Reserves. It runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so get out and get cultured! See our new fancy interactive map to find a museum near you.

PTSD Awareness Day

June 27th is National PTSD Awareness Day. Because of our annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey, we know this illness affects far too many of our families. Treatment and self-help tools have gotten better over the years as our understanding and knowledge has increased. There are many tools and apps on the market, but we’d like to highlight just a few that may be helpful to raise knowledge, awareness and self-help. The “PTSD Coach” is a free iPhone app that can help you learn about and manage symptoms that commonly occur after trauma. PsychArmor.org is a tremendous online resource providing short video courses for veterans, families and community members enabling better understanding and communication, and a final resource is a book written by Larry Dewey, War and Redemption: Treatment and Recovery in Combat-related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

If you’re a caregiver of someone with PTSD it is essential to increase your knowledge of what PTSD is and how you can help, but it’s also important to learn how to make time for self-care and why it’s so important to you. We have some caregiver events coming up. See if there is one near you.

June 28th is a day to remember- good for you and for us too!

Starting June 28th, Macy’s stores participate in the Salute Those Who Serve campaign for two weeks. Get some back to school shopping done, maybe get some towels that fit your new house, or maybe go ahead and buy that ball gown, suit, or that dining out outfit. We will send you more info about it later this month!
