JACKSONVILLE, FL. – Military families and CSX join forces to celebrate Military Appreciation Month with the launch of the Blue Star Families Chapter sponsored by CSX in Jacksonville, Florida. The new Blue Star Families Jacksonville Chapter will support more than 92,000 military members and their families by connecting them with more than 30,000 civilian neighbors through career resources, outdoor recreation, reading programs and other engagement opportunities.
With the support of CSX, Blue Star Families will also establish community chapters in Baltimore, Chicago and Nashville in 2019. Through the work of these chapters, community members can become Blue Star Neighbors, by proactively engaging with military families and providing the necessary support to help military families thrive, which ultimately strengthens the community at large.
There are more than 43 million members of the military community in the United States; and according to the Blue Star Families’ 2018 Military Family Lifestyle Survey, 48% of military families do not feel a part of the civilian communities in which they live and want more significant opportunities to connect with their civilian neighbors. Only 18% of military families feel the general public understands their sacrifices, and only 19% feel they are aware of the challenges service places on families.
“Military families are isolated,” said Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO of Blue Star Families. “Moving every two to three years, military families come to Blue Star Families to find their community wherever they move. In Jacksonville, thanks to the support of CSX, resident Blue Star neighbors will now be there to welcome them.”
CSX and Blue Star Families recognize it is critical that every member of our community feel accepted, respected and understood – including those who serve our country every day. Last November, CSX launched CSX Pride in Service, the company’s new national program to provide military and first responder communities with the resources and support they need – when and where they need it. As a part of that program, CSX is teaming up with Blue Star Families to launch four new CSX Blue Star Families Communities by the end of 2019, with more to come in 2020.
“CSX is pleased to partner with leading organizations like Blue Star Families to support the men and women who serve our country and our communities each and every day,” said Bryan Tucker, vice president of Corporate Communications at CSX. “A commitment to service is and always has been part of the CSX DNA. CSX is proud that nearly 1 out of every 5 of our 22,000 employees is a veteran, active duty military service member or a first responder. We are excited to channel our culture of service into programs like these that help meet the needs of military families in communities where we operate.”
The Blue Star Families, Jacksonville Chapter launch was held at CSX’s corporate headquarters where 75 employees built 15 bikes for military family kids. CSX and Blue Star Families community launch events will be held throughout 2019 with each event tailored to the specific need of that community.
