On May 14, I had the amazing opportunity to attend A Bowie Celebration at the Blue Note Hawaii thanks to the wonderful new partnership established between the world-class Jazz club and Blue Star Families. It definitely compliments BSF’s mission to give back to our military families, on the island no less, with great musical experiences and amazing shows.
While the Blue Note venue expands beyond the island into New York, Milan, Tokyo, Nagoya, Beijing, Napa, and Rio de Janeiro, the Hawaii location resides within the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort. Here, guests can find year-round entertainment starring world-renowned and local artists from the Jazz and Blues genre, as well as comedians. Not to mention, a full bar and gourmet dinner menu sure to be enjoyed!
Though, before I start getting into the memorable performance, let me say that the ambiance at the Blue Note is genuinely incredible. The candle-lit tables and blue light background around the lounge set the mood for the upcoming performance. To top it off, as soon as you arrive, the wait staff is friendly and very accommodating.
Now, it’s time for me to reveal the details of what you came here for—none other than the Bowie Celebration. If you’re a David Bowie fan, then you know how much of a major role he played being the influencer he was in the course of popular music. His videos during the 70s and 80s were totally groundbreaking and his live performances were theatrical and absolutely loved by all his fans.
Not very familiar with his magical works? Chances are high you hear his top hits playing through the radio regularly (that is, depending on the station you listen to!), from “Under Pressure” to “Changes,” “Magic Dance,” and “Space Oddity.” So I was excited to sing along when A Bowie Celebration: The David Bowie Alumni Tour came to the Blue Note!
This tour of Bowie’s, in particular, featured musicians from his bands over the years such as Mike Garson, Gerry Leonard, Mark Plati, Carmine Rojas, Corey Glover, Joe Summer, and Lee John. And this concert far exceeded my wildest dreams because, well, he played his greatest hits! The crowd sure loved it and I did, too. From beginning to end, the tempo, rhythm, vocals, and dynamic chemistry the Alumni had on stage had everyone in the venue cheering for more.
In the end, the whole performance was very entertaining, and the musicians were funny and interactive with the audience. It was an overall exciting and stellar night!
Thank you to Blue Star Families and Blue Note Hawaii for giving away 30 tickets to military families to enjoy such an amazing evening out on the town! Everything was truly great!
