It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Or, at least that’s how the song goes.

But for many military families, the holiday season isn’t filled with happiness and cheer. Instead, it means time spent apart so our heroesour loved onescan fulfill their duty to protect and serve our country overseas.

For that reason, since 2016, Blue Star Families and Starbucks have joined forces each holiday season to put up Yellow Ribbon Trees in participating Starbucks stores across the country. And the mission of these trees? To inspire store-goerswhether military-affiliated or civilianto hang an ornament in honor of local service members who are away for the holidays.

This act of kindness that started with 30 locations has grown to hundreds of locations just three years later!

How incredible is that?!

But we wanted to know what inspired Starbucks store managers to host a Yellow Ribbon Tree this year.

Read what just a few of many had to say (and maybe grab some tissues before you do):

“I would be honored to host a yellow-ribbon tree because I myself am a military spouse. My husband has been serving in the Air Force for over 10 years and is currently deployed in Kuwait. I am a Store Manager of a Military Family Store and I love that my customers and team support me on my journey while my husband is deployed and it would be a great way to bring my customers, the Military community, myself and my store all together and show support this Holiday season.”

My dad has been with the Navy my entire life and just shipped out on his active duty deployment last week. This will be his fifth and final deployment of his service career, and will not be home with us for Christmas (his favorite holiday) this year for the first time since his immediate post 9/11 days. Hosting a yellow ribbon tree would not only mean a tremendous amount to me, but it would make me so happy to be able to honor his service and that of all veterans who won’t be home for Christmas this year.

We want to say thank you to all the service members and their families who make sacrifices everyday to protect our country and our freedom. Families give up holidays and special moments with each other and we think it would be a small token of our thanks to be able to give back to them in some way.”

“It’s important to my partners and I to take the time to recognize the many servicemen and women that come into our store every day. This tree would symbolize our appreciation of their sacrifices they make every time they put that uniform on. We also want our community to be invited to write something down to have their appreciation for our service members to be heard.”

Thank you for being a Blue Star Neighbor, Starbucks!

We’re so thankful for Starbucks support of our nation’s military families not only during this season, but throughout the entire year, with gatherings such as Valentine’s Day card-making parties to Military Spouse Appreciation Day celebrations, Welcome to the Community Coffee Connect events, and so much more.

It’s because of Blue Star Neighbors like Starbucks that we’re able to continue our mission to give our nation’s military families a sense of community and support. Not to mention, a place where they can see their local civilians and businesses come together to empower those who keep our country safe.
