Retired Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, the former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman and a Quincy native, and his wife, Ellyn Dunford, are the honorary chairs of Welcome Week, an event hosted by the nonprofit Blue Star Families aimed at helping veterans settle in new communities.
The nonprofit said about 600,000 active-duty families and those transitioning out of service move each year. Welcome Week, which runs through Oct. 3, helps to connect veterans with neighbors in new communities and stave off isolation.
In a statement, Joseph Dunford said moving is a way of life for military families.
“There are some very unique challenges and sacrifices to the military lifestyle,” Dunford said. “Given the contribution that they make to the security of the nation, giving their willingness to do whatever must be done, unquestioning. The fact is we can do more to help them. We can do more to support them. We can do more to make sure that their sacrifices are recognized and appreciated.”
