At Blue Star Families, we strive to create unforgettable experiences for all of our members, but there’s something truly special about hosting military families in our Blue Star Connect Outdoors program. Recently, we had the privilege of welcoming the Sovern family and several others for a day filled with exploration, discovery, and joy at ABQ BioPark in Albuquerque, NM.
For the Sovern family, who had recently arrived at Kirtland Air Force Base, this event was more than just a day out — it was a lifeline during the period of transition following their military PCS. As they made an effort to settle into their new surroundings, they found solace and support in the Blue Star Connect Outdoors program.
In their own words, the Sovern family expressed gratitude for the opportunity to partake in such a meaningful experience. “Thank you so much for offering such an amazing experience for military families!” they exclaimed. “These events are priceless for us. It’s such a wonderful way to help welcome families during a sometimes difficult transition.”
As a family of five, they highlighted the financial strain of purchasing tickets to attractions. However, thanks to the generosity of Blue Star Connect Outdoors, they could enjoy a day at the zoo together without worrying about the cost. It was a day filled with laughter, exploration, and bonding — a memory they will cherish for years to come.

But the magic didn’t end there. The following week, the Sovern family returned to ABQ BioPark for another adventure, this time exploring the Botanical Garden and Aquarium. With a day off from high school, one of their sons joined his mother for a special mother-son date, complete with an outdoor picnic.
Reflecting on their experiences, the Sovern family again expressed their heartfelt appreciation. “Thank you again for providing us with the opportunity to create lasting memories together.”
