Collective Generosity on Giving Tuesday Helps Combat Food Insecurity

Published: November 2, 2022

This year’s #GivingTuesday campaign is an opportunity to contribute to military families facing food insecurity so they can provide nutritious meals for their families and fulfill their mission. Help us rally our community for good!

Did you know that Giving Tuesday—the annual day of giving and generosity that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday—is coming up on November 29th?

This year’s Giving Tuesday encourages collective generosity with campaigns from dozens of nonprofits, including Blue Star Families’ Nourish the Service. And that matters because Blue Star Families depends on donations to continue providing resources and building a community for service members, Veterans, and their families.

The Impact of Food Insecurity on Military Readiness

There is a strong connection between food insecurity and military readiness. Food insecure adults and children are more likely to experience health issues and chronic conditions, less likely to be ready for school or work the next day, and more likely to suffer from depression. Military readiness suffers when food insecure adults and their children live in fear of hunger each day, worry about how they will feed themselves and their families, go without meals because they cannot afford enough food, or struggle with the after-effects of being hungry all day. Organizations like Feeding America aim to end hunger throughout the nation by providing services and resources to its members who need help feeding their families.

In 2020, Blue Star Families found that 14% of military families experience food insecurity. That’s more than 1 in 5 military families. This number is alarming when you consider that military members are our most valuable resource and deserve to be cared for and supported. #GivingTuesday is a perfect opportunity to combat food insecurity among military families.

How You Can Help

Blue Star Families is a nonprofit organization that supports military families by connecting them to community resources, providing access to more than 10,000 free resources, and offering a sense of belonging through Blue Star Families Chapters.

This year, Blue Star Families will be hosting our first-ever #GivingTuesday campaign to help combat food insecurity. The goal of the campaign is to provide meals to at least 500 military families.

Here’s how you can join in & spread the word:

  1. Join Blue Star Families’ community and make a donation – could be $5, $25, $50; however much you can give, you will make a difference.
  2. Invite your friends, family, and coworkers to join in the giving spirit.
  3. Share Blue Star Families’ #GivingTuesday campaign with others through social media and email, so they can learn more about how food insecurity impacts the military community and give a gift, too!

We are so happy you’re part of our community. Thank you from all of us at Blue Star Families. Here’s to rallying around military and Veteran families – together.
