Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate, and more than 70% live off base in their local communities. People might not know that many military families struggle to feel connected to their new community.
Sixta and her family are no strangers to moving for the military. She and her husband, Luis, are high school sweethearts. Though they’ve been together for years, the military lifestyle has presented its fair share of new experiences.
Their most recent permanent change of station (PCS) was the hardest. Between a delay in receiving household goods, paying out of pocket for hidden expenses, and trying to make their children feel comfortable with a big change — they were overwhelmed trying to feel like a part of their new community in San Antonio.
When Ron Nirenberg, mayor of San Antonio, learned that many military families like Sixta’s, feel a low sense of belonging where they live, he raised his hand to help. Together with Blue Star Families and Schlotzsky’s, they teamed up to welcome the family to their new community.
During a small Blue Star Welcome Week ceremony, Mayor Nirenberg called upon his fellow citizens to recognize, thank, and welcome military families to the San Antonio community. In addition, Blue Star Families and Schlotzsky’s presented Sixta and her family with free sandwiches for a month in honor of Blue Star Welcome Week and Schlotzsky’s new Hometown Heart program.
Although their move to San Antonio got a rough start, Sixta and her family are beginning to feel right at home in their new community. And even though Blue Star Welcome Week is over, celebrating military families can happen year-round and is as simple as reaching out a hand to say, “Welcome home!”
