Shutdown Story Feature – Brittany

Published: October 31, 2025

When the government shuts down, life doesn’t pause for military families, even when the paychecks might. Across the country, thousands of families are stretching savings, skipping expenses, and finding strength in community.

For Brittany, an Army National Guard spouse whose husband is also currently serving in an active-duty capacity in the Army, the shutdown has brought stress and instability to their lives. Starting a new position while waiting for delayed pay and reimbursements has meant juggling bills, visiting a Blue Star Families-run food pantry, and watching their savings drain faster than expected.

“We didn’t know how we’d pay rent; we’ve been draining our savings,” said Brittany. “But, walking into the food pantry for food or essentials, there were smiles and encouragement from Blue Star Families staff and volunteers. It has made my day. They know us by name.”

Each military family experiences the shutdown differently: some face missed paychecks, others struggle with lack of access to base services, some may see delayed benefits or assistance, and many carry the weight and stress of uncertainty.

Military families, like Brittany’s, show up day after day, navigating the challenges while serving our nation. Brittany and her family say they have been able to participate in local events, feeling supported and included by her local Blue Star Families Chapter. Even her children’s school has stepped up and paused tuition for their family, lightening a financial burden.

Brittany’s story reflects the diverse, yet all too common, realities of military life during the shutdown. Across installations and in communities around the world, each military family’s experience adds another layer to the shared story of service and strength in uncertain times.
