When global tensions rise, military families don’t just watch the news. They live it. They feel it. That’s the spouse managing everything at home alone. The mom who dropped her 19-year-old off at basic training and has been holding her breath ever since. The sister refreshing the news at 2 a.m. The young child who doesn’t quite know what to make of it, but knows something is different.
And what I keep coming back to is this: These families were already carrying so much before this moment. Two government shutdowns in five months. Members of the Coast Guard working through a lapse in appropriations, facing the real possibility of missed paychecks. The uncertainty and emotional weight doesn’t start when a conflict begins — they build in the days and weeks of not knowing that come before and surround it.
Military readiness starts at home. When families are stretched thin, anxious, and uncertain, that doesn’t just affect quality of life. It affects our national security.
In our 2024 Military Family Lifestyle Survey, 83% of active-duty families told us they believed the U.S. would be involved in a major conflict within the next three to five years. But this year, more than half of families didn’t think the American public would be prepared to support them if that happened. That’s not a criticism — it’s a call to action.
At Blue Star Families, our mission is clear: military families serve, too. Ensuring they have access to trusted information, community support, and practical resources is our highest priority in moments like this. Whether through Coffee Connects, Military Families Outdoors, Blue Star Support Circles — we’re here.
Despite nearly 90% of Americans having a favorable view of military families, only 38% have actually taken action to support one. We can change that.
Here’s how you can #DoYourPart right now:
→ Reach out to someone you know from a military family — just ask how they’re doing or use the ideas at bluestarfam.org/support
→ Join the nation’s largest digital community for military families at thebsn.org
→ Find or support a local Blue Star Families Chapter in your community
When we all do our part, families are supported — and service members can focus on the mission.
