It's More Than Coffee: How Connection Strengthens Military Families

“Military life will introduce you to the best people you’ll ever meet — and then take them away.”

That’s how military spouse and Blue Star Families Chicagoland Chapter member Kay describes the rhythm of this life — deep connection, followed by inevitable change. It’s a life where friendships are formed quickly and deeply, knowing that goodbyes are often just around the corner.

It’s why something as simple as a cup of coffee can mean so much more.

For Kay, monthly Blue Star Families Coffee Connects at her local Starbucks Coffeehouse became more than just a casual meetup. They became a constant.

“Tuesdays have become more than just a random day of the week,” she shared. “They’ve become the day I know I can vent to people who get it … the day where your kids connect with other kids and they don’t ask, ‘Where’s your daddy?’ because they understand.”

“To you, it’s just a Tuesday coffee at Starbucks — but to us, it’s a safe place once a month where we aren’t judged,” Kay said, describing how these gatherings bring together friends who understand this life.

And that’s exactly what connection looks like in military life.

Why Belonging Matters

At Blue Star Families, we know that connection isn’t just nice to have — it’s essential.

But just a few years ago, nearly half of military families told us they didn’t feel that sense of belonging.

So we got to work.

That insight led to the creation of our Blue Star Chapters — a local, community-driven model designed to build connections right where military families live.
