It’s More Than Coffee: How Connection Strengthens Military Families

“Military life will introduce you to the best people you’ll ever meet — and then take them away.”

That’s how military spouse and Blue Star Families Chicagoland Chapter member Kay describes the rhythm of this life — deep connection, followed by inevitable change. It’s a life where friendships are formed quickly and deeply, knowing that goodbyes are often just around the corner.

It’s why something as simple as a cup of coffee can mean so much more.

For Kay, monthly Blue Star Families Coffee Connects at her local Starbucks Coffeehouse became more than just a casual meetup. They became a constant.

“Tuesdays have become more than just a random day of the week,” she shared. “They’ve become the day I know I can vent to people who get it … the day where your kids connect with other kids and they don’t ask, ‘Where’s your daddy?’ because they understand.”

“To you, it’s just a Tuesday coffee at Starbucks — but to us, it’s a safe place once a month where we aren’t judged,” Kay said, describing how these gatherings bring together friends who understand this life.

And that’s exactly what connection looks like in military life.

Why Belonging Matters

At Blue Star Families, we know that connection isn’t just nice to have — it’s essential.

In fact, when active-duty families feel a sense of belonging in their local community, they report stronger well-being and are more likely to recommend military service.

But just a few years ago, nearly half of military families told us they didn’t feel that sense of belonging.

So we got to work.

That insight led to the creation of our Blue Star Chapters — a local, community-driven model designed to build connections right where military families live.

Today, we’ve launched 13 chapters across the country, with plans to grow even further. Because when communities come together, everything changes.

The Power of Partnership

For the past 10 years, Starbucks has stood alongside Blue Star Families — and the broader military-connected community — helping turn connection into action.

Through Coffee Connects, Starbucks Military Family Coffeehouses, and a commitment to hiring military spouses and Veterans, Starbucks has helped create welcoming spaces where military families feel seen, valued, and supported.

And the impact is real:

  • 85% of Coffee Connect participants report a strong sense of social connectedness
  • Families return again and again — and bring others with them

For military families navigating frequent moves, deployments, and constant transitions, these moments of connection are everything.

A Simple Way to Show Up

Right now, current events are asking a lot of our military families — and they need our support more than ever.

This May, in honor of Military Appreciation Month, there’s a simple, meaningful way to make a real difference.

When you purchase a Starbucks Military Appreciation  eGift, you’re turning a simple act of appreciation into real impact. For every Military Appreciation eGift sold in May, Starbucks will donate $5 to Blue Star Families. Those funds help power programs like Blue Star Outdoors, Nourish the Service, Caregiver Support, and, of course, Coffee Connects — keeping military families connected, supported, and thriving.

Send it to someone who serves or supports them — or keep it for yourself. Either way, you’re helping build something bigger.

Why It Matters

Because behind every cup of coffee is something deeper:

A conversation.
A friendship.
A moment of belonging.

And for military families, those moments can make all the difference.

This May, join us in showing up. Send an eGift. Do your part. And help ensure every military family feels connected — no matter where they call home.
