On the Return of the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group

WASHINGTON, D.C. — May 15, 2026

Blue Star Families joins the nation in celebrating the imminent return home of the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group after what will stand as the longest aircraft carrier deployment since the Vietnam War.

For more than 320 days at sea, the sailors of the Ford and Carrier Strike Group 12 answered our nation’s call with extraordinary professionalism, courage, and resolve. What began as a scheduled deployment evolved into a historic global mission spanning the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. They executed critical operations, overcame significant challenges — including a serious fire aboard the ship — and never wavered in their commitment. These sailors are true American heroes. Their resilience, dedication, and sacrifice reflect the very best of our Navy and our nation. We celebrate their accomplishments and offer our deepest gratitude.

At home, their families carried an immense and often unseen burden throughout this record-breaking deployment. Spouses, children, parents, and loved ones endured prolonged separations, crushing uncertainty, and the daily realities of military life without their sailors. They managed households alone, supported one another through difficult times, and sacrificed birthdays, anniversaries, school events, and countless irreplaceable moments together so their sailors could stay focused on the mission. These military families — including the service members themselves — served too. Their strength, resilience, and quiet heroism are every bit as extraordinary.

As the leading national organization representing America’s military and veteran families, Blue Star Families is committed to ensuring no family faces these challenges alone. We recently launched a chapter in Hampton Roads — one of our nation’s largest military communities — to expand resources, connection, and belonging right where they are needed most.

This historic homecoming is a powerful reminder that our military families shoulder an enormous share of the burden for America’s missions. We call on Everyday Americans to take a moment to acknowledge the profound sacrifices of these sailors and their families — and to join our Do Your Part campaign. Together, we can provide the real support these families need and deserve, both now and for every military family who will answer the call in the future.
