On a picture-perfect day filled with sunshine, sea breezes, and shared memories, Blue Star Families, in partnership with Military Families Outdoors, hosted a spectacular Blue Star Connect Outdoors day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, offering military families the opportunity to explore one of America’s most unique and remote national treasures.

A Journey Through Time
Our adventure began with a scenic ferry ride across the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico, as families bonded over anticipation and excitement. Families were given SPF shirts, sunscreen, and towels to help them enjoy the day outdoors!

Upon arriving at the park, located 70 miles west of Key West, we stepped back in time with a guided tour of historic Fort Jefferson. Built in the 1800s, this fort holds centuries of fascinating stories.
Led by a passionate and knowledgeable tour guide, families discovered hidden corners of the massive coastal fortress, peered through cannon embrasures, and learned many unique facts! Kids and adults alike were captivated by the stories etched into the bricks of this monumental structure.

A Splash of Fun and Discovery
After the tour, it was time to cool off and dive in! Armed with snorkels and fins, families headed to the park’s crystal-clear waters to explore the vibrant marine life surrounding the island. From colorful coral reefs to schools of tropical fish, the underwater world came alive. For many, it was a first-time snorkeling experience — and a memory that will last a lifetime.
The joy on children’s faces as they spotted the many crabs crawling around the island was priceless. The shallow, calm waters offered a safe and welcoming space for all ages to experience the magic beneath the surface. Families truly had a great time despite the rain showers towards the end.

Strengthening Bonds Through Shared Experience
This day wasn’t just about the history or the snorkeling — it was about connection. Blue Star Connect Outdoors events are designed to strengthen the bonds between military families and their communities through shared experiences in nature. Dry Tortugas delivered on that promise and more.
As we ferried back to Key West with sun-kissed cheeks and salt-sprayed smiles, the sense of camaraderie was palpable. New friendships were formed, stories were shared, and a new chapter of adventure was written for each family.
Thank you to our incredible partners, park rangers, and the military families who made this day unforgettable. Until the next adventure — keep exploring, keep connecting, and keep discovering the beauty around (and beneath) us.
