Meet Vicki Johnson | Army Veteran & Spouse
When you move nine times, you learn that the smallest traditions can carry the most meaning. I served in the Army as an Intelligence Analyst and vocalist, where I met my husband while performing in the United States Army Europe Band and Chorus. He, a saxophonist, continues to serve today.
Sherbet punch became my way of showing up — something familiar I could bring to every gathering, no matter where we were stationed.
Growing up, it was reserved for special occasions — baby showers, birthdays, Fourth of July celebrations. I remember the excitement of seeing that bowl come out, knowing something joyful was being celebrated. It wasn’t just about the taste. It was about togetherness.
That tradition carried into my life as a military spouse. From baby showers to holiday parties to book club meetings, sherbet punch became a simple way to create connection and familiarity in new places with new faces.
The recipe began in Missouri but has traveled with us across state lines and oceans. Each time I make it, I’m reminded of where we’ve been and the people who have shaped our journey.
There have been moments of laughter — crowded kitchens filled with conversation and clinking cups — and moments of uncertainty, when everything felt in flux. Through it all, that same simple punch brought comfort and a sense of normalcy.
Today, sherbet punch is more than a drink. It’s a symbol of resilience, community, and celebration — a reminder that home isn’t just a place, it’s what you carry with you.
