Meet Jenna Buck | Marine Corps Military Brat
By the time I graduated high school, I had moved nine times. Our family traveled up and down I-95 — from Brunswick, Maine, to Jacksonville, Florida, with several stops in between. Through it all, my grandparents’ home in Silver Spring, Maryland, was our “true north.” It was the one place that felt steady — a constant where my brother and I could catch our breath between moves, schools, and new beginnings.
In a life defined by transition, we learned early: home is where the Navy sends you.
There was one meal that always brought us back together — flank steak with baked potatoes and corn on the cob, sometimes paired with a simple caprese salad. It became a marker of time and place in our family’s story. In Maine, it meant winter was finally giving way to summer. More importantly, it meant my dad was home from deployment.
Watching him at the grill — steady, focused, present — became one of the most comforting sights I knew. Those moments weren’t just about dinner. They were about relief, pride, and being together again.
Through every move, that meal remained. A reminder that no matter where we were stationed, joy could still be found around the table — and home could be created, one shared meal at a time.
