Supplemental Vision Coverage Options for Military Retirees

Published: December 5, 2024

Transitioning out of the military can be both exciting and challenging. Among the many changes, securing continued healthcare—especially vision coverage—is essential, as you can no longer get eye exams, contacts, or glasses for you or your family through TRICARE once you retire. That’s where the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP) comes in.

Understanding Eligibility for FEDVIP Vision Coverage

FEDVIP offers military retirees and their families a dependable vision coverage solution (also dental, though today we’re focusing on vision). Families of active-duty service members are also eligible for FEDVIP vision coverage. This voluntary program ensures access to essential services, from routine eye exams to corrective lenses, helping you maintain quality care after service.

Open Season Enrollment

Enrollment in FEDVIP is not automatic. The annual Open Season runs from November 11 through midnight ET on December 9, 2024. You can also enroll if you have a qualifying life event outside of this period, otherwise make sure to mark these dates to secure your family’s vision coverage during this year’s annual Open Season. Visit BENFEDS.gov to confirm your eligibility and enroll.

Coverage Options and Benefits

FEDVIP provides a range of supplemental vision care plans, with options like Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) FEP Vision offering access to over 175,000 independent providers and national retailers, including Vista Optical in Military Exchanges, MyEyeDr., Walmart and America’s Best. Online options are available, too, through sites like contractsdirect.com, 1800contacts.com and warbyparker.com. With your BCBS FEP Vision benefits, you can get designer frames, valued up to $195, as part of their Exclusive Collection. Or you get a frame allowance to use at any in-network independent provider or national retailer nationwide. Learn more at bcbsfepvision.com.

Cost Considerations

Managing finances post-military is key, and FEDVIP’s flexible plans suit diverse budgets. Compare premiums, deductibles, and co-pays across plans to find the best fit for your needs. Unlike TRICARE, FEDVIP has its own premium structure, so reviewing all costs is essential.

Access to a Broad Provider Network

Many FEDVIP carriers offer plans that include coverage whether your provider is in their network or out of network. Choosing in-network providers typically lowers costs, so evaluating the network of your plan is an essential step in the decision-making process to ensure convenient access wherever you are.

As you begin this new chapter, having reliable vision coverage through FEDVIP can make a significant difference. Explore your options, consider costs, and join an upcoming Blue Star Families webinar to learn more—and have some fun!
