WASHINGTON, D.C. – Blue Star Families (BSF), the largest nonprofit organization supporting military and Veteran families, congratulates four Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipients who have contributed significantly to the organization’s success. General Joseph Dunford, USMC (Ret.), Chris Eisgruber, Reta Jo Lewis, and Craig Newmark have all demonstrated their unwavering support for Blue Star Families, and the organization acknowledges their efforts by publicly recognizing them.
The Ellis Island Medals of Honor have been presented since 1986 and are one of the country’s most prestigious awards. They commemorate the indefatigable spirit of those who immigrated to the United States during the Ellis Island era. Each year, its recipients are read into the Congressional Record. Past honorees include presidents of the United States, CEOs of major corporations, Nobel Prize laureates, and renowned public figures, including BSF CEO Kathy Roth-Douquet and Board of Directors Chair Lieutenant General Gwen Bingham, USA (Ret.).
General Joseph Dunford, USMC (Ret.), served as the 19th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and was instrumental in supporting military families during his tenure. His service and dedication continue today. Chris Eisgruber, the 20th president of Princeton University, is a strong advocate of the military community and has supported several military initiatives at the university. Reta Jo Lewis, the president and chair of the Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, is an active supporter of Blue Star Families and helped shape its success. Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist and craig newmark philanthropies, is a steadfast supporter of military families and has made several significant philanthropic contributions to support their well-being.
