Spooky season is upon us, making it the perfect time to get outdoors and learn about some of the creatures that often haunt our imaginations. Last week in San Antonio, Texas, Blue Star Connect Outdoors hosted a bat-viewing event at Bracken Cave Preserve, where participants had the chance to witness the largest bat colony in the United States take their nightly flight!
The evening kicked off with an engaging talk from a volunteer who shared insights about the bats, their colony, and the cave itself. Families gathered and were ready to learn about the bats and their critical role in the ecosystem. Following the presentation, participants embarked on a short hike around the grounds, exploring historical mines before settling down at the bat cave viewing area.
One attendee dubbed the event a “Family Fun Night,” expressing how special it was for her entire family to attend together for the first time. Another participant said, “Not only did you put together an amazing goody bag, but I get to go home with another souvenir!” She also shared, “I got peed on by a bat!” Her daughter chimed in, “Right in the face!”
Another attendee who had suggested the bat event during a previous gathering was equally ecstatic. He expressed that the experience had far exceeded his expectations and that he was “so excited to finally say I saw the bats!” His son added to the sentiment, calling the experience “magical and majestic.”
As the night wrapped, it was clear that this event was not just about watching bats; it was about creating lasting memories, strengthening family bonds, and fostering a love for nature. The laughter, the stories, and the shared experiences will be treasured for years to come, reminding us all of the joy that comes from connecting with the natural world.
At Blue Star Connect Outdoors, we strive to create opportunities for families to connect with nature and each other. This bat-viewing event was a perfect example of how a simple night out can turn into an unforgettable adventure. We can’t wait for our next gathering — who knows what other magical experiences await? Until then, keep exploring, keep laughing, and keep making memories!
