Military families navigate unique challenges, from frequent relocations to extended separations. These realities often lead to feelings of isolation and disconnect. However, through the combined efforts of Blue Star Connect Outdoors (BSCO) and Blue Star Families Outposts, these families gain access to transformative opportunities that build resilience, foster community, and connect them with the rejuvenating power of the great outdoors.

A Partnership That Makes a Difference

Blue Star Connect Outdoors bridges the gap between military families and the therapeutic benefits of America’s national parks, forests, and waterways. Blue Star Families Outposts, a groundbreaking initiative funded by craig newmark philanthropies, expands Blue Star Families’ impact by collaborating with local nonprofit organizations to establish community hubs that deliver essential resources and programs to military-connected families.

Together, these programs amplify their strengths, creating a seamless support network for military families. Sultan Camp, Director of the Hampton Roads Veterans Employment Centers, aptly described the essence of this collaboration:

“Many of our military families face barriers to accessing America's national parks, forests, and waterways despite the numerous mental and physical benefits these spaces offer. The Hampton Roads Workforce Council is proud to be a Blue Star Families Outpost and is committed to bridging this gap by supporting the BSCO program. We believe all military families should have the opportunity to experience the joys of the great outdoors and thrive.”

Ashley Stevens, Senior Manager of Family Impact Programs, oversees the BSCO Program at Blue Star Families and highlighted the synergy between these initiatives:

“Programs like BSCO and Blue Star Outposts don’t just provide access to nature and community resources — they build connections and create memories that strengthen the resilience of our military community. The health and wellness benefits of being outside in nature are especially critical for military families navigating the ever-changing landscape of moves, deployments, and other challenges. By working closely with Outposts, we can host holistic events that cater to their diverse needs, ensuring every family feels a sense of belonging in outdoor spaces.”

A Day of Connection at Fort Monroe National Monument

A shining example of this collaboration was the recent BSCO event at Fort Monroe National Monument, hosted in partnership with the Hampton Roads Workforce Development Center. This gathering showcased the potential of united efforts to create meaningful, community-building experiences.

Families explored the monument through ranger-led tours, interactive activity stations, and Junior Ranger booklets. Creative activities such as crafting corn husk dolls and using spotting scopes encouraged hands-on learning, while the NPS Passport Program inspired future park adventures. Meanwhile, parents exchanged practical advice on schools and housing, and children formed lasting friendships through play.

The Madison family shared how these events have enriched their lives:

"Our family has been very fortunate to be included in Blue Star Connect Outdoors events, leading us to many fun outings we normally wouldn’t have attended. As a homeschool family, we love having guided tours, and park rangers help us learn the rich history, animals, and nature that inhabit these parks. The events also take the stress out of planning, so all we have to do is enjoy the day!"

Reflecting on the event, Dorie Stolley, Hampton Roads Outdoor Leader, shared:

“What better way to build community than sharing exciting outdoor experiences followed by lunch and hot chocolate on a winter’s day?”

The event also deepened the relationship between BSCO and the National Park Service (NPS), with Ranger Aaron playing a pivotal role in ensuring its success. As a frequent collaborator, Aaron exemplifies how partnerships can enhance programming and increase access to enriching outdoor experiences for military families.

Looking Ahead: A Stronger Network for Military Families

As Blue Star Families continues to develop both BSCO and the Outposts programs, the focus remains on collaboration — with nonprofits, the NPS, and other community organizations. Together, these initiatives open doors to outdoor adventures, community building, and resilience for those who serve and their families.

Organizations interested in joining the Blue Star Families Outposts program can find more information on the Blue Star Families Outposts page. With every new partnership, the reach and impact of these programs grow, ensuring no military family is left behind in accessing the benefits of nature and community.

By uniting the strengths of BSCO and Blue Star Families Outposts, we are building a brighter future for military families, creating lasting memories, and fostering connections that transcend the challenges of military life. Together, we can continue transforming lives, one outdoor adventure at a time.
