For the past 12 years, Blue Star Families has been collecting data from military families and advocating for policy and legislation that helps military families thrive – during service and beyond. In 2021, our unprecedented social impact research recommended that stronger relationships and more inclusive military and Veteran communities can improve outcomes for military and Veteran families. According to our 2021 Social Impact Research: The Diverse Experiences of Military and Veteran Families of Color, 19% of active-duty respondents feel uncomfortable in their military community, and 16% feel uncomfortable in their civilian communities. The top reasons for this discomfort are: racial discrimination, lack of diversity, don’t fit in, lack of connection, and gender discrimination.

Given that finding, the question became: how can Blue Star Families support? The past two years have challenged us to have difficult conversations about the diverse experiences of military and Veteran families of color.
Not to mention, the world experienced an international shift in the way we engage with our communities, families, and peers. Our lives became virtual in an instant.
