Navy Federal, PenFed, and USAA are joining forces to tackle military spouse unemployment with the help of Blue Star Families. Through our prior research, including the annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey (MFLS), several challenges to military spouse employment have been identified, including the fact that 35% of military spouses report that they are not employed but need or want employment (2020 MFLS). Thanks to this monumental partnership, we can go beyond the challenges and work toward identifying actionable solutions to solve military spouse unemployment.
Over the next few years, we will be conducting research to identify foundational barriers and indices of success for long-term military spouse employment. With the shift and acceleration of our workplaces over the past 18 months, this is an opportunistic time to dig into 'the why' behind military spouse unemployment and underemployment and start to uncover solutions.
The research phase of the initiative will kick off in January 2022 and continue through 2024. Results from the research will be released at key points over the next several years, which will enable key conversations to be had and solutions to be developed and implemented.
