Veteran Capitol Hill Advocate Tom Porter Joins Blue Star Families

Tom Porter | Vice President, Government Affairs

WASHINGTON, DC — Blue Star Families (BSF), the nation’s largest nonprofits dedicated to providing support to military and Veteran families, is announcing the addition of Tom Porter as Vice President, Government Affairs. Prior to joining Blue Star Families, Porter served nearly three decades as Congressional staff and as a government relations leader in Washington, DC, and as a Navy Reserve Public Affairs officer.

“Blue Star Families is a trusted thought leader on all things related to military and Veteran family quality of life issues. Today, with the creation of this new position, we commit to serve as the go-to source for the most current information and innovative solutions, for the highest levels and across all branches of government,” said Blue Star Families CEO Kathy Roth-Douquet. “There is a direct connection between military quality of life issues and the ongoing recruitment and retention challenges plaguing the U.S. Armed Forces. These are interlocking problems that require big thinking to solve, and Tom Porter has a proven history of solving big problems..”

Porter has a long history of advocating for Veterans and military families, serving nearly eight years with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) as the Executive Vice President of Government Relations, and more recently with The Independence Fund. Additionally, he served more than a decade representing energy companies at Morgan Meguire, LLC, and served on the staff of three Members of Congress. He also retired this month from the U.S. Navy following 27 years of reserve and active service around the world, including deployments to Afghanistan and the Middle East.

“I am honored and proud to join an organization that is at the forefront of improving the lives of America’s military and Veteran families and connecting them with their communities,” said Porter. “I look forward to working with Congress, the administration, the military and Veteran community, and our network of partners to empower this most deserving population who have sacrificed so much for our country.”
